Islanders Defeat Surrey For Second Time
Thursday, May 8th
Surrey
The Delta Islanders led by Carlton Schuss and Dane Stevens beat the South Fraser Stickmen 10-6 Thursday night in North Surrey – in another penalty-filled, ragged contest – their second in a week.
The Delta’s larger offensive unit – featuring Schuss (8 pts) and Stevens (5 pts) - had little difficulty with the South Fraser defence in the first period – and racked up a 5-1 lead while playing short handed for 8 penalty minutes.
The Stickmen transition game is still emerging, under new head coach Jamie Scott and there were several plays in which the defence wasn’t deployed quickly enough to meet a Delta multi-man attack.
At 7:31 of the second period, simmering animosities boiled over; first in a fight between South Surrey’s Jason Jones and Delta’s Nigel Phillips. While that played out in a corner, both goalies lumbered – like gunslingers in a ‘B’ Western – to the centre of the rink and tangled. Deltas’ Steve Bourget and South Fraser’s Graham Chandler were ejected from the game along with Phillips and Jones.
In the third period, the Stickmen found their speed and began to find holes in the Delta offence. Their only penalty came on a delay of game when an equipment challenge on the Delta goal keeper was lost. However, a strong third period performance couldn’t overcome the deficit which, at one point, was a six goal spread.
During the Stickmen’s 46 minutes of penalties, Delta scored 3 power play goals.
Despite a total of 55 penalty minutes against Delta, South Fraser’s goals were at even strength, except for a short handed tally by Jordy Willing.
Stickmen scorers were: Willing (2) and Ryan Harwood (2) plus 2 assists.
Bromley (1) and Davidson (1).
Although the loss leaves the frustrated Stickmen winless (0-6) so far this season, their play continues to be spirited and committed. Next they travel to the Island for a pair of games which begin a series of road appearances. South Fraser next appears at home on Thursday, June 5th, hosting Coquitlam.

Stickmen Scare Bellies In Third Period
Friday May 2nd,
New West
After giving the Bellies a tough match in pre-season losing only 9-5 New West knew not to take this years Stickmen lightly.
The penalty boxes were filled sometimes four deep in players as the officials called a tight game leaving only three aside several times in the game.
After the first the Bellies managed to notch only a one goal lead as South Fraser put on a show of talent and patience.
Devon Winters got the start between the pipes and regained his strong tending that was shown many times last year. Despite being out shot Winters performed very well and stuffed the Bellies.
The second period was filled with penalties and offered each team man advantage situations with New West getting the better of the situations. The Fish put three more past Winters and took to the dressing room at the end of the second with a comfortable 5-2 lead.
However this is a new Stickmen team, full of determination and confidence with plenty of skill and athleticism Giving up is not in their vocabulary and the came back with a roar. Playing hard the Stickmen managed to win the third, coming up short with a 7-5 loss but at the same time a very impressive performance against last years provincial champion team.
The Intermediates are off for a stretch and will return with a home game May 11th at North Surrey Rec Center against Victoria.
