Stickmen Scare Bellies In Third Period

Colton PorterFriday May 2nd,
New West
After giving the Bellies a tough match in pre-season losing only 9-5 New West knew not to take this years Stickmen lightly.

The penalty boxes were filled sometimes four deep in players as the officials called a tight game leaving only three aside several times in the game.

After the first the Bellies managed to notch only a one goal lead as South Fraser put on a show of talent and patience.

Devon Winters got the start between the pipes and regained his strong tending that was shown many times last year. Despite being out shot Winters performed very well and stuffed the Bellies.

The second period was filled with penalties and offered each team man advantage situations with New West getting the better of the situations. The Fish put three more past Winters and took to the dressing room at the end of the second with a comfortable 5-2 lead.

However this is a new Stickmen team, full of determination and confidence with plenty of skill and athleticism Giving up is not in their vocabulary and the came back with a roar. Playing hard the Stickmen managed to win the third, coming up short with a 7-5 loss but at the same time a very impressive performance against last years provincial champion team.

The Intermediates are off for a stretch and will return with a home game May 11th at North Surrey Rec Center against Victoria.

Intermediates Open Season With Road Loss

Saturday April 26th,
Victoria
The Intermediates didn't get a break in the schedule when they had to open their season against last years Intermediate 'A' league champions, the Victoria Shamrocks.

The Stickmen came out slow in the first and found themselves down 5-0. Devon Winters started between the pipes for South Fraser was pulled last in the first, replaced by new comer Keenan Lambright of Kamloops.

In the second period the Stickmen came out with a little more jump on the ball and the defense responded quicker then in the first. As a result South Fraser got their first goals of the game adding three in total to the scoreboard while Victoria answered with another five of their own.

In the third Head Coach Jamie Scott switched things up a bit and the team responded with another three goals while holding the Shamrocks to only three of their own. Victoria walked away with 13-6 season opening win.

Specials teams played little in the match as only Victoria had an opportunity to showcase the power play and that was only once in the game.

South Fraser goals were scored by several players including Thompson, Rakic, Bromley, Porter, Biagioni and Haigh.

Next game is at home at M.S.A. arena where the Stickmen host the Burnaby Lakers on Monday, April 28th at 8:00pm

South Fraser Surprises Delta In Exhibition Action

Tough DefenseMonday April 21st,
Abbotsford
In their first home game since their move to Abbotsford the Stickmen hit the floor and surprised a tough and physical Delta Islander team.

Through out the night Delta continued to take the lead only to have South Fraser come back to tie. With the Islanders leading 6-5 late in the third the Stickmen came up with the tieing goal with minutes left.

With both teams scrambling to put in a game winner the Stickmen took a penalty and went on the short man with just under three minutes left.

After Delta failed to get the go ahead goal both teams went to sudden death overtime to resolve the match. Delta got the first shots in but it was Jordan Schulstad striking from the top to pick the top right corner that gave the Stickmen their 7-6 victory. Goals on the night were scored by Rakic (2), Bromley (1), J. Schulstad (3) and Smith (1). Andrew Bromley also lead the assists column with three.

With all the work that South Fraser has done to re-locate the team, re-build the franchise and put together what they believe is a winning formula it became a bit of an emotional win for the Stickmen. The 2008 season looks to be a very interesting one.

The Intermediates next game is on the road in Victoria on Saturday April 26th before returning for their 2008 season home opener on Monday night, April 28th against the Burnaby Lakers.

Friday April 11th, New West

Keenan LambrightThe first Stickmen team to play exhibition this season was the Intermediate team who drove down the highway to New West to take on what is expected to be a top Intermediate 'A' team this year.

The Stickmen went toe to toe with the Bellies over the first two periods with both team rotating goalies and putting on a great show of talent.

Sam BiagioniWith Devon Winters off, South Fraser started young Keenan Lambright, a draft pick from Kamloops and then rotated in a current Ridge Meadows Midget as well.

It wasn't until part way through the third that New West managed to open up a small lead before ending the game with score of 9-5. The action was fast and well executed by a very young Stickmen team and for most of the team it was their first game of senior lacrosse.

The Intermediates take a break now while the Juniors are up Sunday for their annual Georgia Cup battle with the Victoria Shamrocks. Game time is 2:00pm
