Stickmen Intermediates Get Final Approval For Move

After months of meetings, preperations and voting the South Fraser Stickmen received final approval to relocate the Intermediate franchise to Abbotsford.

After last season the executive realized that moving the team was their only option if they ever wanted to put out an top rated 'A' program. After the Maple Ridge minor association approached the Stickmen and past approval to obtain arena time, the Stickmen ran into a wall with the city and were not able to finish the deal.

With a base of players coming from Hope to Surrey it only seemed natural to make Abbotsford the home arena. So after three months and three sets of votes the Intermediate 'A' league approved the moving of the franchise out to the valley.

The Stickmen Intermediates will play their home games out of M.S.A. arena on the scheduled Monday nights with three home games slated for North Surrey arena for the Victoria and Nanaimo matches.

The Junior's will continue to play out of North Surrey arena for 2008

Stickmen Land Top Notch Coaching Staff

When Joe Willmott took over as governor of the Stickmen in 2006 he realized that the way to build a competitive Junior team was to start with a solid Intermediate program.

Since that time the Stickmen have put a lot of hard work into that very philosophy and as a result this year South Fraser has been able to put together one of the most qualified Intermediate coaching staffs in the league.

Jamie Scott, who brings a wealth of player experience as well as Junior 'A' level coaching experience will head up the Intermediate staff this year as head coach.

Jamie has been playing or coaching lacrosse for over 34 years and his trophies and medals tell the tale. He has won Provincial and National Championships in minor lacrosse then played 5 years of Jr including his final year with the South Fraser as the team's first MVP.

Jamie played 14 years of senior lacrosse and the highlight of this was his President's Cup National Championship in 1999. He joined the New Westminster Jr 'A' Salmonbellies coaching staff in 2005 - and shared the 2005 coach of the year award.

Complimenting his staff the Stickmen have added Dennis Bull, Cam Janzen, and Tod Olson. All three have extensive player careers as well as strong successful coaching and management roles in the recent years.

To add to the rebuilding process the Stickmen organization continue to build on the quality players picked in the inaugural 2007 Junior 'A' Midget Draft. This resulted in key players like Devon Winters, Jackson Decker and others helping to build on the program from day one.

Again this year the Stickmen drafted many of the top players from the Fraser Valley knowing they would contribute immediately beginning with grabbing Jordan Schulstad in the first round. "He's a solid kid that can play both ends of the floor and he understands the game well" says Cam Janzen, Director of the Intermediate Program.

This truly will be an exciting and turn around season for the South Fraser Intermediate team.
